I'm a millennial, and when I started my business, social media didn't exist.
I suppose that's just another way that my (likely our, if my readership stats hold true) generation has been a bridge between two worlds.
When I was a kid, I rode bikes til the streetlights came on. MTV actually played music - as did MuchMusic, here in Canada, which had superior VJs if you ask me. (I follow Strombo on socials, he's still a good dude.)
Now as an adult, I make a living online. I don't have to leave my house to learn anything or earn anything. A dream, when I was a kid, but social media's changes lately have meant that it is no longer a nice place to spend time as a user - let alone a nice way to gain traction as a business owner.
The thing about being old as shit is that you get to be a knowledge keeper.
This is something I've talked about here before.
When you remember the days of old, you have certain knowledge that can benefit the people coming up behind you.
Sometimes the world changes too much for your knowledge to be relevant, unless you stay with the times. (cough boomers cough)
But the knowledge on how to get clients without social media is more relevant than ever, in a world where social media isn't what it used to be.
I grew my freelancing, consulting, and agency work to $1M in revenue by starting in a time before TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook even existed.
My career launched the same year as Myspace and WordPress. I didn't have the luxury of "building an online presence" the way we do today, in order to grow my business. So I learned how to grow without it.
